When we practice mindfulness, we work to stay in the present by paying attention to how we’re feeling in the moment. And sometimes how we feel is angry, or frustrated, or overwhelmed. When we do notice that we're feeling a little out of control or upset, it is helpful to take some time to calm down. In this session, we'll be making a 'calm down buddy,' a friend who will always be there for us when we experience challenging emotions!

  • Sometimes it can be helpful to think about our feelings like a thermometer.
  • When we are a little upset, we can think about our negative feelings as at a four out of ten on a thermometer.
  • When we are really upset, we can think about our negative feelings as at a ten out of ten on a thermometer.
  • For most of us, when we are at a ten on our feeling thermometer, it's important to take some time for yourself to calm down, take a deep breathe in and out, and think about working through those negative emotions.
